30 PB Ideas in 30 Days

I've just discovered (and just decided to do) PiBoIdMo. 30 picture book ideas in 30 days. This is much more doable for me. I'm always telling people I have more book ideas than Random House (now Penguin Random House) has authors. Time to put that theory to the test. As this is the 3rd day of the month I've got some catching up to do.

Nanowrimo?

There's only one day left for me to decide if I'm going to participate. Quite frankly (and most untypical for me) I have no idea worth 50,000 words that I haven't begun already. Hopefully, inspiration will strike soon. All I need is a little spark of an idea and off I'll go.

Kill Your Darlings

Don't fall so in love with your writing that you're unable to accept constructive criticism. Be willing to let it go if it doesn't serve your story, essay, article...whatever it is you're writing.

MWA Writers Conference

Attended (and spoke at) the Maryland Writers Conference this past Saturday. It turned out to be a great day full of camaraderie and the gathering of useful information. I feel renewed vigor for the writing process and for being a member of the writing community (or tribe, as Marita Golden calls us). Conferences like these allow those of us in this solitary profession to connect with each other and find out what's new; and these days when it comes to writing and publishing there's plenty that's new. The greatest discovery of the day was finding out how lucrative short story ebooks can be. Who knew? Well, now I do. More to come...

Just because I haven't been here lately doesn't mean I haven't been busy with writing. My latest adventure was to lead a children's writing seminar at the annual MCC Writer's Seminar held at Mountain Christian Church. The overall attendance could have been better but those who were there were really enthusiastic about their writing and that's always inspiring. I find myself inspired as well by the picture on this post. Seeing a group of children happily reading sparks my writer's flame. No time to waste.

A Roaring Start

2012 is off to a great start. In my personal life, I've found the perfect apartment in the perfect neighborhood at the perfect time. In my writing life, I've joined 12 x 12 in 12 (see the badge) where I will write one PB a month for the next 12 months. (What fun!) I've signed up for another 10 weeks of non-fiction writing workshops. Finally, I've volunteered for the 2012 NESCBWI conference in April. I'm off to a roaring start.
